How to get hired in EMS

Every employer runs its own hiring, and the posting is the final word. Most EMS jobs follow these steps:

  1. Get licensed. An EMT course takes about 160 hours, often over two college terms, followed by the National Registry exam and a state license. Paramedic programs take much longer; in Oregon, a paramedic license needs an associate degree or higher, or two of the last five years working as a paramedic. In Oregon, the Oregon Health Authority licenses EMS providers.
  2. Keep your CPR certification current. Every license level needs it.
  3. Expect checks. A new Oregon license needs an FBI fingerprint background check, and many employers add a drug screen, a physical and a driving record check for ambulance drivers.
  4. Apply and interview. Many postings ask for your license, CPR card and driver's license with the application.
